Well, as you can see - it smoked.

Keith, isn't this just showing off your new feature to protect the birds?

When a flock is detected the turbine starts smoking to ward off the birds...

If they get too close the backup kicks in with the bright flashes...

If they still get even closer then...

Them things burn pretty good once you get 'em lit up...

RE: Wind turbine running hot.

An interesting question is: Why do they burn?

I was recently involved in an investigation where the designers of fairly large PV plants didn't bother to incorporate thermal protection in the MW+ machinery.

More than ten of those machines have burned so far. My biggest problem was/is to make the guys understand why thermal protection (and cooling) was needed at all.

I think this is a result of 'puterpipl doing design of just about anything without really knowing what they are doing.

It is also a management problem with bean counters running the operations. Good for me - I get lots of 'interesting' work to do. But it cannot be good for economy on the whole.

RE: Wind turbine running hot.

Now that we have established that the damned things burn we can use them as fuel for some big ol' fashioned thermal plant in place of nasty polluting coal. smile

You guys.. Zapped,

It's wonderful to see these "non-polluting" "green machines" performing.

I've always been a bit unnerved by the forces that these machines have to handle. All you need is a microburst, or a bolt of lightning, or tripping off line, or an unnoticed oil leak, to start a chain of, (bad), events.

It smoked, you have the rest of those photos? I have the whole series, the blade through the pickup truck windshield is the best one.

No!  I'd love to see that one.  Hope no one was hurt though!

I simply don't understand why the closest fire department didn't simply rush up the elevator (rather, climb those stairs (er, climb them there ladders)) and just put out the fire from the inside .....

Shame.  For all the money we pay them .....

/sarchasm - the gaping whole between an enviro and the truth.
