Fresh and Altered Clay

Fresh and Altered Clay

Fresh and Altered Clay

(OP)
I am looking at some driller's logs from old (70s) well completion reports. They desrcibe layers of altered clay and also layers of fresh clay. Can someone explain what those descriptions mean?

RE: Fresh and Altered Clay

Please, A little more information.
What part of the country/world is this from?
Is this a domestic type (potable)water well?
Was the driller a specialty-type? Water well, mineral exploration, etc???
Does the altered or fresh clay seem to describe alluvial sediments or rocks (formational units)?

RE: Fresh and Altered Clay

The driller's log  is a potable water well in the Lebo Member of the Ft Union formation in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. It is an alluvial sandstone/siltstone deposit with coal seams. These descriptions are within the first 300 ft bgs. Thanks.

RE: Fresh and Altered Clay

the driller can - sorry to be so glib.  Driller's logs can be quite random.  It'd be hard to guess, but the local drillers would be able to answer this question.

RE: Fresh and Altered Clay

Perhaps one is baked by mine fires?  Would be good to ask a local driller if they know the terms.

Also you may be able to narrow down the area you are looking at here:  http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/ngmdb/ngm_PNsearch.html
