Section VIII Division 2 Blind

Section VIII Division 2 Blind

Section VIII Division 2 Blind

(OP)
According to ASME Section VIII Division 2 Section 3.3.4.1: "All forgings 50 mm (2 in.) and over in nominal thickness shall be examined ultrasonically in accordance with SA-388."  Therefore, a 20" 600-lb SA-105 blind flange would need to be purchased with UT examination.  Can someone explain to me why it needs to be?

Thanks.

The store bought blind flange has not been altered.  Does anyone know the reason why the Division 2 code requires UT examination for unaltered blind flanges?

RE: Section VIII Division 2 Blind

My two cents worth would be that the requirement is incumbent upon the original manufacturer to do the examination.  With you, as the purchaser, requiring appropriate paper work to demonstrate the examination if you are using it on a Code-stamped vessel.

I don't believe the intent is for the purchaser to do the examination.
