layers messed up

layers messed up

(OP)
I have a weird problem in NX6.  Turning on or off specific layers doesn't actually do anything in the part.  I think someone may have been fooling around with Visible in View and that screwed something up somehow.  I can Hide or Show features in the Part Navigator, but using layers is useless.  I found a closed thread about this very problem from a few years ago, but it devolved into whether Visible in View was useful in part mode and the question never got answered.  Is there a way to set this all right again?  Reset to Global doesn't seem to do anything.

RE: layers messed up

I have seen that before too, it was with models done by an eastern overseas source.
First make sure all your layers are turned on.
Then (as you mentioned) go into each one of your model views and:
Format > visible in view > reset to global
and then:
View > operation > save

I hope that will do it.

RE: layers messed up

Or edit -> show and hide -> Show all ; is also working sometimes.  I had the same issue a while ago and visible in view didn't worked, layers where ok i thought i was going crazy, till someone pointed me in that direction. And it worked!

Neither of those methods worked.  I only have one view when I go into Visible in View: TFR-TRI.  Does that sound right?  I've never looked there in part mode before.  I opened another part that I know layers works correctly in and that's the only view there also so I suppose it's ok.  I don't know what else to try at this point.  Just for grins I did a part cleanup and didn't help.  I may have to call GTAC and see what they can come up with.

RE: layers messed up

go to:
Information > other > view > select one of the model views > make sure "visble layers" is set to "global"

I hope there are better suggestions

RE: layers messed up

(OP)
Aha!!  Ok, so oddly enough all of the views were set to global EXCEPT for TFR-TRI, which was the only view I saw in the list when I went to Visible in View.  So all of the times I did the Reset to Global it never took.  But I know why now.

After picking Reset to Global I would pick OK, which would then go to the list of all 256 layers, where I would pick OK again to get out of the menu.  That's not the way to do it.  After you pick OK the first time, and the list of layers comes up, you need to pick Cancel to get out of the menus.  After I tried that and then checked that views status it was Global.  Now my layers work just fine.

Thanks to everyone for the help!

RE: layers messed up

So when you turn a layer on, nothing shows up? Or when you turn a layer off, nothing gets hidden? Or is it both?

RE: layers messed up

It drives me crazy to see, or hear about, files like what you have.
I think there should be a setting in NX that would allow/disallow "visible in view" in the canned model views.

RE: layers messed up

(OP)
It was both.  Turning layers on or off made no change in the display.  The only way to do it was to show or hide features in the Part Navigator.

It's fixed now though and life is good again.  smile

RE: layers messed up

Go into Customize and simply REMOVE the menu item 'Visible in View'.  Perhaps a bit draconian, but effective winky smile

I'm with jerry1423.  It has been SOP in my experience to prohibit any such changes to canned views, be it layers or orientation.

RE: layers messed up

At least 'oreintations' can NOT be saved in a 'canned' view.

RE: layers messed up

I NEVER have visible in view available within the modelling environment. I do have it for drafting because there are occasional and legacy requirements for it.

Come the revolution the first ones up against the wall will be the sods who use visible in view in modelling!
