bolt dimensions

(OP)
ASME B16.5 shows bolt diameters but do not reference the bolt dimensions in detail.
As ASME BPV section VIII, Div. 1, Appendix 2 requests the calculation of the total cross section of the bolt, I'd like to know, where I can find bolt dimension to be used for appendix 2 calculations (core diameter, ...).
Help is appreciated.

RE: bolt dimensions

Standard machinery handbooks have those dimensions.

Check on-line for paper copies of the books, if you don't rust the actual on-line search results.

RE: bolt dimensions

Additionally, ASME calcs will use the area at the minor diameter (root area), rather than the "tensile stress area" tablulated for example in Machinery's Handbook.

Mike

RE: bolt dimensions

SnTMan-

I've seen lots of folks use the root diameter based area, but do you have a Section VIII paragraph I can refer to which mandates this? It is not necesserely a conservative approach, as the load for the flange design is derived from the area...

RE: bolt dimensions

jte, see Appendix 2, 2-3, definition of "Ab". Agree, it is conservative as to required area, but after that...

Well, the rules are what they are.

Mike

RE: bolt dimensions

Mike-

Thanks! Kind of obvious in retrospect...

But... I think I'll just keep on using tensile area for Ab in 2-5 eqn. (4). Unless I'm grasping at straws. Then I'll take the less conservative Code definition. At the end of the day, App. S says it's not entirely precise anyway.

RE: bolt dimensions

jte, you're welcome, as I usually try to do when speaking about the Code, I looked at the book before opening my mouth...

I've always been kind of curious about the origin of Eqn (4). Average of Am and Ab? Huh?

Regards,

Mike
