Syncronous Motor Rotor Drift

Syncronous Motor Rotor Drift

Syncronous Motor Rotor Drift

(OP)
The company I work for has 16- 15,000 hp snchronous motors that are connected to a gear box that moves natural gas. We sent 3 of these motors out for repair in the last 5 years and had them upgraded so that we could use these motors for either 15,000 or 20,000 hp applications. The factory took the poles off of the rotor and rewound them, and also replaced the insulation. They put the motor and stator back together using h old iron, and we installed them.

Since they have been installed we have had a problem with the rotors being driven towards the bull gear. This is causing damage to the buttons between the rotor and the gear, and also causing damage to the bearings. When we took the coupling apart after running the motor for a short time, it looked like there had been electrical welding between the buttons of the rotor and gear. We installed a set of copper brushes against the NDE and DE of the rotor to control shaft voltage and current.

The rotor will not stay on mag center and keeps running towards the gear. Has anyone ever experienced this before, and if so, what was the cause, and what was the cure?

RE: Syncronous Motor Rotor Drift

If the rotor is supported on separate bearing pedestals, try moving the stator away from the gearbox by 5 mm. This will, in general, should pull back the rotor.
