NX6 - Visible in View

NX6 - Visible in View

NX6 - Visible in View

(OP)
NX 6.0.5.3

Using visible-in-view, I make a layer visible. I then create some dimensions, selecting the geometry I made visible. When I now make the geometry invisible, my dimensions change to 'retained'.

Did something change between NX3 and NX6 ? Surely that behavious isn't correct ?

RE: NX6 - Visible in View

I'm unable to reproduce this behavior when testing NX 6.0.5.3.

I also tested NX 7.0.1.7 and NX 7.5.1.4 with the same results, that is if I turn a dimensioned object OFF using Visible in View to the set the layer that the object was on invisible, the dimensions referencing the now invisible object are NOT changed to a 'Retained' status.

I tried this by saving the part, reopening it with partial loading, everything that I could think of which could possibly affect this and each time, nothing.  I get the same behavior I verified in NX 3.0 (and NX 4.0 and NX 5.0 as well).

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you, but there has to be something more going on here than just a simple Visible in View changing the display status of a dimensioned object.

Thanks for looking John.

I'm thinking there's something else going on. I'll look further.

RE: NX6 - Visible in View

My example was very simple, a Block, which I dimensioned in two Drawing views and then using Visible in View, set one view invisible.  Saved the Drawing file. Closed it and reopened.  That was the extent of the test.  Note that all the Drawings were created from scratch but I used an NX 3.0 part for the Master Model.

RE: NX6 - Visible in View

Did you create the dimensions on the same layer as the geometry. Reading between the lines of your description it is possible that if the layer in question is in fact the current work layer for instance then you may find those results almost inevitable.

Okay, I'm thinking it is related to dimensioning silhouette curves.

RE: NX6 - Visible in View

Yep, that's it, and it's understandable.  The silhouette curves ONLY exist as a result of a view being generated.  They are not actually part of the model.  So when the object is visible the silhouettes exist.  However, once the object is made invisible there is nothing to generate the silhouette from so they are removed, not only from the view, but since they don't exist anywhere EXCEPT as part a 'display list' there is nothing for the dimensions to reference anymore and thus they become retained.

Mystery solved.

It worked fine in NX3 and NX4.
