design of wale to raker connection
design of wale to raker connection
(OP)
Hello all,
I am trying to design a raker to wale connection for a sheet pile earth retention system that can resist torsional and weak axis bending.
I have a 210k horizontal load to resist from the wall which relates to about a 90 k vertical component at the wale.
The wale is applied to sheet piles, therefore the wale is left unsupported for approximately 3 feet between pans.
My questions are:
1. Can I resist torsion and weak axis bending with stiffeners applied to the top/bottom of the flange where the raker meets the wale?
2. If I cannot use stiffeners, any ideas on how to accomplish? Please consider upsizing the member as a last option.
Thanks for all who respond. I have also added a quick sketch

RE: design of wale to raker connection
If you could make a connection to the center line of the wale, your situation would be improved substantially, both flanges would be engaged in weak axis bending, strong axis bending and the only torsion would be at the pans.
I suspect that the pans are the danger point, you will be applying an out-of-plane moment to a plate. At the least, it is likely to buckle under a load that troubles HP sections.
