Sanitary sewer typical design considerations

Sanitary sewer typical design considerations

Sanitary sewer typical design considerations

(OP)
Hi guys

I am having trouble with my local council on this one. Basically I have a reinforced concrete sanitary sewer with the following parameters:

1500mm dia (5')
10000mm deep (33')
250mm wall thick (10")
2 layers of reinforcement in each face of the wall with 50mm cover(2")
Waterstops at every construction joint

Does this sound like typically detailing practice for sanitary sewers. What do others specify when designing sewers or other underground cambers.

All help will be appreciated.

Please up load the drawing and calculation (hoop stresses)

waterstops? is this cast in place? Cast in place pipe with waterstops is not recommended. I would recommend Class-V pre-cast RCP at a minimum with rubber gasket joints. However, I am unsure why you are using concrete pipe for a sanitary sewer in the first place. If you do, it should be lined to prevent corrosion.

RE: Sanitary sewer typical design considerations

Don't put in a corrosion barrier. It will be work for grandchildren to repair or rehab the line. Is this a pressure line or gravity line?

Is there a reason why you aren't using precast pipe sections?

The pipes run into the sewer, I don't know of any precast units of this magnitude.

The inside of the chamber will have a corrosion barrier. I don't know about the civil design of the sewer but I would say that it is a gravity line.

I can post this hand sketch that gives a indication of what the structure looks like.

RE: Sanitary sewer typical design considerations

If I understand you sketch, this is some type or riser.  I would increase the wall thickness to 12 inches to leave enough room for the waterstop. I would either cast in a PVC liner (T-Lok) or use one of the many coatings (Raven, Sauereisen, etc.) for protection.
As others have said, it's unusual to cast in place pipe, but for your shape (kind of an oval) it looks like the only option.

RE: Sanitary sewer typical design considerations

looks like a manhole to me and yes they make eliptical pre-cast pipe in a variety of sizes and may have a size that will work for you.
