Measure Surface Finish of Shaft Housing

Measure Surface Finish of Shaft Housing

Measure Surface Finish of Shaft Housing

(OP)
Hi

I have a Shaft Housing that has a 14.3mm ID with a surface finish of 8-16RMS. The ID is 880mm deep. The housing is open on one end only. I need to measure the inside surface finish for the entire length and the closest i have come to is measureing the first 150mm using a mitutoyo measuring instrument. I have been told the difficulty is with the length of stylus. Is ther any measuring device capable of measuring the above.

RE: Measure Surface Finish of Shaft Housing

There are casting compounds that can pull a replica in a few minutes.  Lay a dowel in the compound while it's wet so you can pull it out in one piece.  You might be able to rotate the workpiece and replicate the entire bore with no more than five samples.  What a pain in the ass.

Thanks Mike,

Can i ask you what are those compounds called and do they harden quick and come off easily from the surface to check the surface finish. If so how accurate is the measurement?

In addition to the the site above here is the Fflexbar home page with a little better selection.  Also is the Dynamold site with another little different approach.
The Facsimille material on the site posted by MikeHalloran is also very good but tougher to work with.
