ASME B31.1 Flange Joint - Bolts or studs?

ASME B31.1 Flange Joint - Bolts or studs?

ASME B31.1 Flange Joint - Bolts or studs?

(OP)
I can't seem to find anything to determine if bolts are acceptable for a flange joint on an ASME B31.1 piping system. Can anyone point me in the right direction to be able to select the proper bolt or stud and nuts? Is there any case where washers should be required?

RE: ASME B31.1 Flange Joint - Bolts or studs?

kone....

1) Machine bolts and studs are acceptable if the meet the dimensional and material requirements as defined within ASME B31.1

2) There is a preference in many companies for what is called the "stud-bolt" configuration (one stud - two nuts) as it gives the maintenance people more flexibility in installing an breaking the joint.

3) In metallic piping systems washers are rare, in GRP piping systems, washers are recommended

These subjects have been discussed in other threads on these fora..
