Sizing Portable Generator for Back-up Power at Wells

Sizing Portable Generator for Back-up Power at Wells

Sizing Portable Generator for Back-up Power at Wells

(OP)
I am in need of information on how to spec a portable generator for a potable water well.  I have collected the disconnect information, i.e. 3-phase, 400 amps, 600 V.  However, there are two disconnects at the well house.  One was on the outside of the building and is 400 amps, 600 V, and the disconnect on the inside of the building is 30 amps, 600 V.

Any information on where to go from here is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

RE: Sizing Portable Generator for Back-up Power at Wells

To size the generator, one needs to know the hp, voltage, and starting characteristics of the well pump.

You also need to know what other electrical equipment will operate when the emergency generator is running.

Some times if you have many items at the facility, you would only put critical pieces of equipment on the emergency generator power to save cost. The emergency generator can be expensive.

If you only have minor electrical loads in addition to the well pump, you can put all of the loads on the emergency generator power.

bimr is correct. You need the starting current for the pump. This is much higher than the running current required.  Also call your power supplier to get their input on controls and such.
