what is the difference between wrought and foged
some material standard show wrought steel or forged steel
what is the difference of this two words?

RE: what is the difference between wrought and foged

xiexienins;
Wrought can mean - rolled, forged, extruded or combination of the previous forming methods that shapes the item into final form. So, forging is a subset of wrought product forms.

Forged - is a distinct forming method.

RE: what is the difference between wrought and foged

'Wrought' means 'worked'.

Just a footnote to metengr's excellent answer.

Good engineering starts with a Grainger Catalog.

RE: what is the difference between wrought and foged

xiexienins,

I interpret "wrought" to mean that the stock has been mechanically worked in one direction (ie. rolled or drawn), so it has a predominantly longitudinal grain flow .  I interpret "forged" to mean that the stock has been mechanically worked in more than one direction, thus resulting in a grain flow that somewhat follows the shape of the forging.  The resulting properties would differ mostly in the transverse grain direction.

Hope that helps.

Interesting interpretation but how do you reconcile cross rolling of plate products, a non-wrought product????

RE: what is the difference between wrought and foged

In my industry MWFs we have two big groups of metals Wrought and Cast with lots of variations with in the two big groups
