Hydro requirement for Temporary Boiler

Hydro requirement for Temporary Boiler

Hydro requirement for Temporary Boiler

(OP)
Hi All,

I have a few questions I am looking for some advice regarding the installation of a temporary rental boiler:

1. Does the code give any allowance for hydro of Boiler external piping for a temporary installation? The boiler external piping is a spool piece of about 1'-6" long with a drain on it.
2. Who's responsibility is it to specify for hydro, the engineer or the S stamp holder?
3. B31.1 gives allowance for an in-service leak test in lieu of hydro. Is there such provision in Sect. 1?

Thanks in advance.

Here are the answers to your three questions above;

Check with your local Jurisdiction that regulates boilers where this will be installed.

No. Installation activities after the boiler is manufactured and stamped is not under Section I.
Check with your local Jurisdiction that regulates boilers where this will be installed.

RE: Hydro requirement for Temporary Boiler

No such alternative in-service leak test for Section I.

Contact your Jurisdictional authority for the steps needed to address installation and operation of temporary Boilers and piping systems. Each Jurisdiction should have rules defining this.

My experience has been that the Boiler Rental unit comes with stamped boiler external piping up to the first isolation valve.
Anything beyond this isolation valve is NBEP (non boiler external piping)which allows for the in-service leak test.
It all depends on how your boiler is setup, installed, and the requirements of the jurisdiction.
Typically the jurisdictional inspector will need to come out, review and authorize with a "permit to operate" for temporary installations. Each jurisdiction has their own rules.

Thanks for the answer. The rental unit came with the first stop check. Due to the fact that the rental unit is tied in to a common header with another boiler, a second stop valve is required. We put in the second stop valve with a spool and drain in between. This spool piece is now considered BEP and B31.1 refers back to Section 1 for hydro requirements.

So my local jurisdiction can override the code on this?

Thanks again.

RE: Hydro requirement for Temporary Boiler

Override? I do not think so.....but....you will have to contact them anyway for a PTO...I would not go any farther without getting their approval and (Permit to Operate).

We already have the PTO. Contractor is the one asking those questions.

If your Jurisdiction enforces boiler and BEP Codes, Any one can specify certification, stamping and hydro:
The spool have to be Mfd & Stamped per Code and can be hydro and stamped at the shop by the Stamp holder who certifies it.
Installation then can be done by a boiler Contractor.
The Jurisdiction can possible allow that arrangement.
(after the first valve is piping not BEP) so the spool will be piping under B31.1
