Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

Hi,

In NX 4, there use to be an Open As option from NX ANT to change or substitute components.  Where is this option in NX 6?

Thanks

RE: Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

"Open Component As" and "Substitute" have both been replaced with "Replace Component".

RE: Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

You simply use the "replace component" command now to do what you need to do.
Click on component in the ANT > replace component

Hi Guys,

That's what I thought.  I liked the Open As feature because it didn't displace my component orientation like substitute/replace tends to do.

Thanks

Starting with NX 6.0 we replaced both Open -> Component As... and Substitute... with a single new function, Replace Component..., thus consolidating the capabilities of the two older functions into just one.

One more point is that this replace component works in the context of load option dialog.. Meaning, if you have Load only structure and do replace component on one of the subassembly, it will only replace the assembly component as a single component..

The best way to do replace component I found was to turn on Load All components in load option and then do the replace component..

RE: Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

Yes, but now having the Replace Component operation honor the Load Option settings will provide users with more control over what actually happens when they perform this operation.  One example would be changing the search path so as to get perhaps a component which represents a later version of the same part model.  Granted, this is a change from the old behavior, but we hope that people will see this as an improvement in terms of being able to fine tune the system behavior so as to best meet your needs.

Hi John & Others,

For some reason, the Close, Open As component feature seemed to work better than the substitute in NX 4.  Consolidating features that do basically do the same thing is good, but funtionality seems to be a little different, in that the component orientation gets turned around.  With the old Open As feature, component orientation was more controllable.

RE: Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

My company just rolled out NX6, upgraded from NX4.  I too am having the same problem, but I cannot find where the Replace Component command is.  I have an assembly where the path to the parts has changed.  I used to be able to select "Open Component As".  Where is the Replace Component command?

RE: Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

Just select the Component(s) of interest, either from the Assembly Navigator or by selecting the Component(s) on the screen, press MB3 and select 'Replace Component...' from the list of options which are displayed.

RE: Open As Option for Assembly in UG NX6

John,

MB3 only changes the cursor from a pointer to a crosshair when it is over a component of the assembly.  The tutorial that my employer has provided says to go to the Assemblies menu > Components > Replace Components.  Components is not under the Assemblies menu.  Components has nothing under it when I go to Customize Menu > Commands Tab and expand Components.

At first I thought that UG was blanking out the Components menu beacuse nothing was loaded in the assembly.  I changed the folder path and UG has no idea where the parts are.

Any ideas?

Have you started the Assemblies module ?
