Ethyl Mercaptan effect on carbon steel

Ethyl Mercaptan effect on carbon steel

Ethyl Mercaptan effect on carbon steel

(OP)
Hello,

I need help. I am working in a proyect design of a pressure vessel and I need to select the appropriate material. The vessel will be filled with Ethyl Mercaptan which is corrosive, and a customer requirement is that the vessel material must be carbon steel. I am aware that in the calculation I must introduce a corrosion factor.

My question is the following; Could the Ethyl Mercaptan modify the molecular structure of the carbon steel, turning it into a weaker material?

The carbon steel available is: ASTM A-516 Grade 70

Its chemical composition is: C: 0.31; Mn: 0.85 - 1.20; P: 0.035; S: 0.035; Si: 0.15 - 0.40; Cb: 0.020

Yield strength:  38Ksi Mínimun
Tensile strength: 70-90 KSI min

The filling substance is: CH3CH2SH – (Ethyl mercaptan)

Thanks very much
