Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

(OP)
Hi,

We are considering acquiring a 800 or 1200 MVA short circuit generator for a lab. Would you have any idea where to find such a product? I'm currently checking the usual suspects (Siemens, Alstom, Toshiba) but might probably miss somes. Would you have any tip for refurbished or used ones?

Thanks.

RE: Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

Spoken to GE?

1200MVA? Wow. Look for a nuke plant which is being decommissioned.

Thanks, I'll try GE as well.

I wish it was that sexy a project, but unfortunately it's just for a test lab ...

RE: Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

Nothing sexier than a 1200MVA short circuit generator

RE: Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

What are you powering this thing with?  Do you have a nuclear reactor somewhere that isn't being used?

What is the time frame that this unit must supply 1200MVA?  You are talking some serious power.  Most steel mill electric arc furnaces I have seen draw less than 100 MVA.

If it is broken, fix it.  If it isn't broken, I'll soon fix that.

RE: Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

If it must supply 1200 MVA for a short period of time only, you might be able to use a significantly smaller generator with some modifications.

RE: Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

It would help if we knew if the 1200MVA is fault power or thermal rating. Over here in the Old World we don't quote equipment fault ratings in MVA any more and haven't for many years. I guess there's some justification in the case of a generator though.

RE: Wish to Buy Short Circuit Generator

Hi:

Short-circuit generators have to supply constant current and practically constant frequency over a minimum of 20 half cycles when testing h.v. switchgear. The generator moment of inertia therefore has to be quite high. I know of a test field where two such generators are installed. The three-phase short-circuit output is 4300 MVA at the generator terminals and 2800 MVA at the transformer secondary winding. The units in question are salient-pole machines with a rotor weight of 225 tons (each of the 8 poles weigh 11 tons), the stator weight is 390 tons and the total weight 680 tons. Stator core and pole length is 5 metres. The generator model size is about 300 MVA. A 3 MW asynchronous motor is accelerating the generator rotor from standstill to 750 rpm within 15 minutes. In order to relieve the foundation from excessive short-circuit forces heavy spring packets are provided between stator housing and foundation.
