Conversion help

(OP)
Hi,

I have been asked to convert an .stp file to an .igs file & wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction please.

Thank you

RE: Conversion help

Since you are posting here in the SolidWorks forum, I take it you have access to SolidWorks?  If so, the STP is a STEP file.  Open the file in SolidWorks, then Save As an IGES (or .igs) file format.

Have you read FAQ731-376: Eng-Tips.com Forum Policies to make the best use of these Forums?

Actually no I don't, I just did a bit of investigative work on the Net.

A potential client has asked the question.

As long as you have the software then it sounds a straight forward process.

Thank you.

RE: Conversion help

bigroo,

It IS just as straightforward as MadMango describes it.  However, if the file has gaps in it or other problems you may not have such an easy time, i.e., crap in equals crap out.

A few comments/questions:
1. Whomever is creating the file in STEP format can probably save it out directly as IGES.
2. What is the purpose for the IGES file?  It is not really a preferred format for solids.

RE: Conversion help

What software do you have?
What software does you client have? Most 3D programs can read both STEP and IGES.

STEP is generally the better (reliable and cleaner) format than IGES.
