Question Concerning Existing Composite Floor Structure

Question Concerning Existing Composite Floor Structure

Question Concerning Existing Composite Floor Structure

(OP)
I'm currently working on an upgrade to an existing floor structure which has composite metal deck and steel beams with shear studs.  The upgrade calls for the complete removal of the existing composite floor system down to the existing steel beams, and then replacing with a new composite floor system with shear studs.  I'm concerned with what needs to be done to with the beams after the existing floor and shear studs have been removed.  Does the beam need to be repainted?, does the stud weld need to be ground off?  Just how big of a concern are these things and what am I missing?

RE: Question Concerning Existing Composite Floor Structure

Paint is not important unless corrosion is an issue.  If corrosion is an issue, paint might not be the right solution.  As far as studs, you will probably need a smooth top to the beam to install new decking and new studs.  The new studs would be welded through the new deck.  Existing studs could remain, and the deck could be coped/cut around the existing studs, but the location and spacing will probably be wrong; since additional studs will likely be needed, it will probably be better and faster to grind the old studs off, install the new deck, and install new studs.

RE: Question Concerning Existing Composite Floor Structure

The beams need to be sandblasted or cleaned by some other technique, could be painted below the top flange but check fireproofing's requirements.
The welds could be left in place, as their presence is beneficial to the bond in between concrete and steel, but if specification calls for complete removal, contact enginner.
