Thread Engagement?

Thread Engagement?

Thread Engagement?

(OP)
I'm threading an aluminum tube with a M60x2 thread. I want to use a steel retaining nut but I'm wondering how much thread engagement I need to keep my 14,000 lb load from shearing the threads clean off on the aluminum tube. The typical 1-1.5 diameter rule or 5 threads doesn't seem to apply here. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

RE: Thread Engagement?

Are you sure the aluminum to steel problem in each thread won't cause failure?

RE: Thread Engagement?

Typically the thread shear area is calculated using the pitch diameter of the thread.  Calculate the thread shear area per unit length engagement.  Use your material's shear strength to calculate load per unit thread engagement.  Apply a design factor based on your knowledge of the loading.  Calculate the final thread engagement length required.
