On a specification sheet for powder coat material I have the value >5 for the mandrel banding test (ISO 1519). On a slightly newer version of the sheet the same test value is now ≤10 Please could someone explain the interpretation of the figures relative to the test that is carried out on the coating. Thanks.

The value listed is the diameter of the mandrel over which you bend the coated panel.  The > 5 value makes no sense to me.  The ≤ 10 value means that the panel must be able to be bent over a mandrel with a diameter of 10 mm or less with no coating cracking/adhesion loss.  The smaller the mandrel diameter, the more severe the strain induced in the coating, hence the need to specify a maximum mandrel diameter.

Hi CoryPad, sorry but I don't understand.  ≤10 is not a specification at all in my view as ≤10 would imply that you could try and bend the panel over a mandrel of 1mm and still expect to get no cracking...Or even you can use any diameter less than 10mm and the coating won't be damaged ..??

 Wouldn't it make sense to define the maximum like before where:

>5 means: as long as the mandrel diameter is larger than 5mm you'll get no coating cracking...

You are mixing cause and effect, specification vs. result.  The result you want is a panel that does not have cracked coating.  So, you set a specification such that the panel must not crack when bent over a certain diameter, say 10 mm.  If a specific part happens to be bent over a 5-mm diameter mandrel and doesn't crack, it meets your requirement because 5 mm is less than 10 mm and it was a more stringent test.
