Old Steel Properties

Old Steel Properties

Old Steel Properties

(OP)
I am in the process of renovating a building and am trying to determine existing capacities of the components.  The building was completed in 1969.

I have come across a size that I cannot find and I need the everyday design properties for a...

2x 5 1/2x 10 gauge tube

I have looked in the sixth edition steel manual to no avail. as well as asking the Google gods to shine on me.

Weight, w:
I:
S:
Z:
Design Wall Thickness, t:
Cross Sectional Area, A:
Radius of Gyration, r:

Also, what grade of steel would this be?

Any help would be appreciated.  I would also assume that this is cold formed, please correct me if I am mistaken in that regard.

RE: Old Steel Properties

Sounds like an offbeat size from a small supplier, probably designed and fabricated for a special client.  My other sources do not show it either.

The properties you should be able to calculate by hand or with a program.

For the steel type you may need to cut off a small sample and send it to a testing lab.

RE: Old Steel Properties

Here are the tube formulas from the Cold formed Welded Structural Steel Tubing manual, 1974.  This was the first edition.  Your section is not listed there.  Use t = .135 for the tube wall thickness.

You might also research the Welded Steel Tube Institute, founded in 1930, that also published the above manual.
