Chain drives - speed fluctuation

Chain drives - speed fluctuation

Chain drives - speed fluctuation

(OP)
I would like to replace an existing  belt drive with a chain and sprocket arrangement. Would like to know what fluctuation in rotational speed I might get on driven shaft and how to calulate. Can anybody help with a formula for this 'polygonal effect'.

Thanks
Terry

RE: Chain drives - speed fluctuation

This is known as "chordal action".  For an explanation, see any standard machine design textbook, or the following link:
http://www.ustsubaki.com/section2.html#0014.  I hope it is helpful.
