I have the oppertunity to upgrade from 2001 to 2001+ and I would like to know if you can set the options to save as 2001 in order to distribute to other versions of solidworks.

No can do. They are not backwards compatible.

You can make changes, you just won't have any features in your Feature Manager.

Use parasolid format then use Features Works to trace back the features. (*Not 100%)
