Type of Centrifugal pumps

Type of Centrifugal pumps

Type of Centrifugal pumps

(OP)
When Flow and Diff Head is given, what are all the factors to be considered to decide , the pump shall be Overhung or Between bearing pumps. Are there any thumbrule that after certain flow and Diff head , we necessarily have to go from overhung to Between bearing pumps. Is this type is vendor specific depending upon their manufacturing range? thanks to clarify.

RE: Type of Centrifugal pumps

There is no rule of thumb. It usually comes down to economics, it is cheaper to manufacture over-hung impeller pumps, than between bearing pumps - with overhung impeller pumps suitable for 99% of applications ranging from pumps with 1" inlets thru to 12" - 14" and in some cases ever larger from some manufacturers. Between bearing pumps usually start around 8" inlets although smaller units are available from some manufacturers - between bearing pumps can range to 30 - 40" inlets or even larger.

RE: Type of Centrifugal pumps

Cost and application... between bearing pumps are generally more expensive (2X bearings, seals, etc.) but critical in high Nss (suction specific speed) applications using double suction impellers for lower NPSHr. Suction and discharge nozzles can vary in location (Top/Top, Side/Side, etc.) Overhung pumps typically have lower Ns (specific speeds) and single suction, more radial, impeller designs and are used in many many applications, as mentioned.
