Import IGES assembly into NX 7

Import IGES assembly into NX 7

Import IGES assembly into NX 7

(OP)
Hi,

I'm coming from IDEAS 12 and playing around with NX 7.

I want to import an IGES file and have the parts come in as an assembly.  Working in IDEAS, I did this by importing an IGES file created with the "All Layers" option turned on and a tailored options list.  This method doesn't seem to work in NX 7.

The only way I can currently get the whole assembly in is to import an IGES file created with the "Flat" option turned on, then manually go through and tell it which bodies to make into parts.  This is pretty tedious since I have to rename everything.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to do this in NX 7?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, not sure how to edit my OP.

But my log file shows that there are some errors with the IGES files or geometry... not really sure what to make of it.  It seems to import into IDEAS just fine, so don't know why NX has a problem with it.

RE: Import IGES assembly into NX 7

Score33,
I think I had trouble back on NX5 trying to open IGES files with the Open command. Have you tried starting a new file and importing an IGES?

Work does not want to switch to NX7 yet, because of the TeamCenter we are running, but I will try to help.

Adam

Hi Adam, been on travel (still am actually) so I haven't really been looking at this...

but all my attempts were with a new file and using the file/import/IGES command.  Once I get back I'll be calling tech support, since as my second post shows, it looks like their translator has a problem since the 416 and 406 forms seem to reference assembly commands.

I'll update my post when I find out more.

Thanks for the help.

Why are you not using the Ideas-to-NX Migration tools to move your data into NX?

John,

wasn't aware of these tools, but I don't have this IGES file as an IDEAS model, it's coming from a Pro/E model (we don't have the Pro/E translator).

RE: Import IGES assembly into NX 7

Well, I know the direct Pro/E -> NX translator handles Assemblies.

RE: Import IGES assembly into NX 7

John, Do you have anymore info on the nx to ideas migration tool?  My company currently uses both and we have problems importing/exporting files at times.  Thanks.

RE: Import IGES assembly into NX 7

I'm not involved with the translator activities for a couple of reasons, the primary one being that they have NEVER been the responsibility of the Dev group here in Cypress (historically it was a St. Louis issue and more recently some of it has moved to Milford).

My advice is to contact GTAC with your issues and they will put you in contact with people who know the ins and outs of the various translation products.

As for my comment above about the Pro-E translator, that's simply because I offered to test that exact issue for an old friend who was being asked to soon having to mix and match NX and Pro-E data and he was looking to verify what worked before they invested in additional software and I was simply doing his a favor.  The test worked to his satisfaction and that was the extent of my involvement.  Granted, once in awhile I have to import something into NX from somewhere else, but it's pretty mundane stuff most of the time.
