Machine Setup - Vice grip changes in all files

Machine Setup - Vice grip changes in all files

(OP)
We have a vise modeled that we use for machining set-ups.  When you move the jaws to fit the part you are currently working on, It changes in all other parts that the vise is in.  I want the vise in the part assemblies to update if the vise file is updated, without changing the main file for different setups.  What is the best way to accomplish this?  I have been looking into pattern and seed files, but I am confused.  I am Working in NX7. Thanks,

Probably to have the differnt vice positions in differnt reference sets.
These jaws move in an assembly . . . correct?

I think somebody else will give you a better answer for this.

RE: Machine Setup - Vice grip changes in all files

You override a components position without changing the original file.  Do a search in the help for Variable Position or Override.

RE: Machine Setup - Vice grip changes in all files

Assembly arrangements.

RE: Machine Setup - Vice grip changes in all files

Assembly Arrangements are fine if there are a finite number of possible situations, such as 3 or 4, which will be used over and over again.  But if it's more than that or it's totally variable, then use Override Position on a case-by-case basis.

To an Engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

RE: Machine Setup - Vice grip changes in all files

The two ways I handle this are: Use a Wave Linked Vise with its own jaw positions (a bit crude). The other, which I much prefer is to have just the vise base as the standard component then the jaws and upper vise body as separate components. That allows for a lot more flexibility with little file size overhead.
