Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

(OP)
I am having a problem. I draw a half cone by the way of 2 half circles on 2 parrallel planes. I use lofted bends to create a half cone (and flat pattern automatically). For this type of construction my shop likes extra material on EACH side of the flat pattern.

I add material to the right side (positive from origin). No issues. I can export flat pattern as DXF and all is well.

As soon as i add anything to the left left side (negative from origin) my flat pattern exports as a 2D warped, unusable geometry.

I have tried many things to add extra material to the left side and the flat pattern keeps coming our screwed up...any ideas to get this to work...

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Check the selection order of your loft profiles, that may be what is causing your warping.

Have you read FAQ731-376: Eng-Tips.com Forum Policies to make the best use of these Forums?

I tried reversing the order...makes no difference. still have the problem..

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Try insert-SM Feature-unfold.
Add xtra metal.

Supress/unpress this feature as needed.

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Can you not add the material in the Lofted Bend profiles?

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

i would like the material to show in flat pattern only. If you add it in flat pattern it incorporates or links itself into the flat. When flat pattern is supressed the extra material does also..which is what i want...just dont understand why i can only add it to one side..i am fairly new to solidworks by the way so go easy on me...:)

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

If it's only needed for the shop drawing, just sketch the additional material in the 2D flat pattern view.

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Not sure if you could use cfgs.one with matl & another one without for your assembly. I would try CBL suggestion.

Hi Jaydee23

Try adding the material in the flat pattern itself. Put the extrude feature  after the flat pattern in the feature tree.

you can suppress these features in the default config. With the same technique you can add cuts & tabs to you final flat pattern without creating problems in the main model.

gurjeet,
This  is exactly what i did. It does not cause any issue in the main model. It is only when i export to dxf that i have a problem. I really want to use this feature as its intended. It works great other than exporting a side view when i add material to the left side.

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Try creating a quarter cone, add the material to the right (working) side, and then mirror the body.

yeah it looks like it will have to be worked around...

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Can you post the actual part for review and testing on other machines?

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

(OP)
This is funny. I was cleaning up the part to post an easy to distinguish example...It worked!!...again this in 1 in 50 or so tries and i did nothing?? different...ill keep you posted.

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

Glad it did. I have seen this some times but in different area/features. It wouldnt work for manytimes. And all of sudden it would, especially when colleague trys to extend help :)

RE: Adding material to flat pattern..issue....help..

This...is a 'somewhat' typical issue.  I don't believe it has anything (in your case) to do with sheet metal.  But sometimes a 'forced re-draw' - ctrl-Q or 'REGENERATE' command is all it takes to get it working properly.

Also, I've noticed it with mates too.  Kind of frustrating.
