Inventor Vault for R&D?

Inventor Vault for R&D?

Inventor Vault for R&D?

(OP)
I'm a member of an R&D team @ company that designs & manufactures large/complex farming equipment..we use Inventor to do our designs. The company has recently desided to have everything (assemblies, parts, drawings) "checked into" the VAULT @ the end of every day.
I feel the VAULT is a very useful tool for finished products, but have an issue with "checking in" all R&D material, from concept to completion, of new (R&D) projects.
I'd very much appreciate the opinions of others that use Inventor, as to their experience/practice with respect to R&D projects & Inventor Vault.

RE: Inventor Vault for R&D?

IMO who cares if its R&D or final product work or whatever... You still need all the aspects that make Vault usefull for production as you do for R&D.
"Where is that concept I was working on yesterday..that might actually work now that I think about it..oh yeah it's vaulted"

Tks for your input mcgyvr, but I feel need to eloborate:
The majority of projects I work on.....take upwards of a year or more befor they are ready for production. During that time there are potentially hundreds , or even thousands of parts (and fewer assemblies) that are rendered useless. Any given part may change, during this "year", possibluy 30 times a day (worse case senerio)......a lot of crap.

During the R&D stages, production parts & assemblies are used in conjunction with proto type parts...effectly becoming proto type assemblies.....and a lottttt of them.

Checking everything in, every day has lead to frequent lose of current/latest revisions of the R&D work.

As you mentioned, looking back @ past work is beificial...to do this I find it safer to keep all R&D work on my hard drive.

Thoughts??

RE: Inventor Vault for R&D?

bkm2,

When you check-in files to vault. It will maintain a version each time you check-in. It will never over write old versions.
You can retrieve any older version.

Hope this answers.
