max allowable stress- 316 ss

max allowable stress- 316 ss

(OP)
I am reviewing a design for a piston for an ABS submital.  ABS refers to ASME BPVC for allowable stress values.

Can anyone tell me values for:
ASTM A240/A480
ASTM A511

A page reference would also be very helpful, then I can purchase the referenced page(s) from Linda Hall Library without purchasing the entire BPVC-IIA volume.

thanks!

Seton

piston will operate at less than 200deg F.

RE: max allowable stress- 316 ss

ASME B&PV Code, 2007 Edition/2009 Addendum Section II, Part D.

SA 240 Grade 316 ss  @200 deg F  17.3 Ksi (lower sress line used).

SA 480 not in Section II, Part D.

A 511 is not in Section II Part D, and is not an ASME B&PV Code approved material.

ouch.

thanks, metengr.

I will speak with ABS and ascertain whether our client must burst test the cylinder design or whether there are other avenues available.

RE: max allowable stress- 316 ss

SA 480 is in Section II Part A Page 863 to 889. It is only the general requirements for flat rolled stainless plate, Strip and sheet. I do not know if that helps. ASTM A 511 is the tollerances and specification for stainless tubing. The grade of stainless may be covered by ASME but that specification only covers tolerances and mechanical values depending on the material grade. As far as I can tell.
