energy consumption

(OP)
I am given a project on energy consumption/saving energy for the plant and i dont know where to start. May you please assist me on things I must know or important things to follow in order to tackle this project.

RE: energy consumption

I suggest you start with beer.

RE: energy consumption

Sorry, couldn't resist.  Your question is pretty broad.

RE: energy consumption

Pete,
I know the English like their ale at room temperature, but to me that's taking energy saving to the extreme. Beer would be the last thing on my energy saving list.

RE: energy consumption

Beer gives me energy. I built most of my beautiful body from beer.

REDFLAG! We shall try and answer your question better next time. But, please, be a little more specific.

RE: energy consumption

You must learn how to save energy.

You think that sounds like a dumb answer? Well, you need to know the methods to save evergy and how to use them or else you will fail miserably. Relying on others, especially the sales forces from other "energy savings" companies can easily result in too much spending with too little energy savings.

There are all kinds of methods such as new lighting, timers or motion sensors for occupancy, new efficient motors, redesigning equipment or processes to be more efficient, VFD's sized for certain pumps or fans, etc. Each method can fail badly if you don't understand how or why you're employing it.

RE: energy consumption

At last! A real useful answer.

Shows that you need knowledge AND experience AND judgement if you shall do a decent job.

PLS for LH.

RE: energy consumption

You must also determine how much of a losing proposition your company is willing to take in "saving" energy.  Aside from actual workstation illumination requirements, swapping out incandescent or fluorescent lights for LED lights would save energy, but the economic payback for the steep initial investment in the cost difference between LEDs and other lights might be unattractive to your company's financial guys.

RE: energy consumption

When you are trying to save money at home, first you have to find out where your money is going and track your expenses.

Same is true with energy.  Start with finding out your plant's energy use patterns, where the power is being used. Contact your electrical utility; they probably have programs to help analyze your bill and consumption.  Do a load survey in the plant to find out what equipment is using the most energy. Add portable meters as necessary to subdivide the big energy users.  Look for unusual patterns.

Example: say the plant has a compressed air system with three compressors maintaining header pressure.  During a low production period turn off all of the air uses and see how many compressors it takes to maintain the leaks.  (We did it at shift change and found 450 HP of air leaks).

One of the IEEE Color Books, IEEE Std 739 (Bronze Book) "Recommended Practice for Energy Management in Industrial And Commercial Facilities" would be a good resource.

As others have said, watch out for energy saving vendors and devices.  Most only save their profit margins, not yours.
