Can anyone tell me if the the maximum flexural stress, fcf, used in AASHTO Eq 6.13.6.1.4c-1 uses the girder section modulus using the net area or the gross area?  In LFD I was taught to calculate the section modulus using the net area (subtracting bolt holes only for controlling flange) when calculating stresses, but LRFD is a whole different animal.  The descriptions in the LRFD commentary are of no help from what I can read.   Thanks!

Thanks!  I had about 5 design examples and all of them skipped the splice design.  Thanks for the link, it answered my question  :)

Actually, that example uses the older LRFD that has equations similar to LFD.  Effective area used the Beta in the equation, whereas now it is a ratio of the tensile and yield strengths.

I am going to assume that the stress calculations are the same though, I don't see why it'd be any different.
