deflection of portal

(OP)
what are the typical deflection limits for a portal with masonry panels?

RE: deflection of portal

Check with the Masonry Insitute... I like something in L/600 range usually - maybe even tighter.

RE: deflection of portal

L/600 or the gap between the masonry panels, whichever is less.

RE: deflection of portal

My interpretation of the L/600 limit is that it is for beams or lintels supporting masonry (in other words, vertical deflection).

For a portal frame, I would limit horizontal deflection to H/300, unless sealant joints limit deflection even further.

RE: deflection of portal

What do you need the portal frame for if you have a masonry wall?

RE: deflection of portal

The Australian steel code, AS4100, recommends H/240 for industrial buildings with masonry walls.

RE: deflection of portal

SCI publication 252 has some suggestions for deflection limits in portals, for masonry its H/300
