Would like information on the design criteria for vapor belts used in  conjunction with tube and shell heat exchangers

RE: vapor belt design for heat exchangers

Dan43, can you be a little more specific? Thermal/hydraulic? Mechanical?

Regards,

Mike

RE: vapor belt design for heat exchangers

I have a customer who has requested that the tube and shell heat exchangers that are being supplied for heating natural gas (gas in the shell and water thru the tubes) include a vapor belt at the inlet and outlet gas nozzles. I am trying to understand the design criteria for the vapor belt.

Take a look at HTRI Technical Report "STG-17 Annular distributors: A parametric design study (2005)".

RE: vapor belt design for heat exchangers

You need to considered your inlet area's and check Rho*v^2 to size the area. The shell can be extended through the vapor belt with slots cut-out for the gas to flow through. The vapor belt can be flanged heads welded to a shell section with the heads welded to the outside of the shell. All flow area's need to be sized. Proper impingement protection should be used. Thermal expansion of the shell/tubes must be considered. Also don't forget to have all portions drainable.

Hope this helps get you started.
