Neoprene Coupling with Chlorinated Water

Neoprene Coupling with Chlorinated Water

Neoprene Coupling with Chlorinated Water

(OP)
Hello:  Does any one have experience using neoprene materials with chlorinated water (5 ppm).  I need to couple two 12" pvc pipes conveying chlorinated water and I have at my disposal neoprene flexible expansion joints from our bone yard.  All compatibility tables I checked say that compatibility is "not good," but I wonder is its ok to use for a short period (three months of intermittent use).

I understand that no one would recommend using these two materials but I just want to know if some one has experience.  Thanks in advance your any help,

Igor

RE: Neoprene Coupling with Chlorinated Water

5 ppm for three months? I think I would use any material, especially plastics. 5 ppm is an extremely low concentration. I'm sure it will work well.

I have seen 2 mg/l of chlorine cause zinc impellers to fail in 6 months.

The chart shows not recommended for bleach which is 5% chlorine.

You would have to weigh the consequence of a pipe failure. Probably not a good idea.

Thank you so much for your response and comments Micalbrch and Bimr.  That compatibility chart is amazingly complete!  For the past three days I left a stretched piece of neoprene soaking in the chlorinated water stream and it seems to be doing ok.  In my case, the benefits ($2000 saving) outweigh the risk (pumping interruption + delay in ordering the proper fittings) so I'll take the chance.  Thanks again; it was great to get outside opinions.

Igor.

PS.  I'll post the news if I have any incidents.
