Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

(OP)
I feel like this has been covered before, but I could only find this thread: http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=115792

Anyway, I'm looking for a good reference book for solids / mechanics of materials.  So far I've been recommended:

Engineering Mechanics - Timoshenko
Advanced Mechanics of Materials - Seeley
Foundations of Solid Mechanics - Fung

Any idears or suggestions?

RE: Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

You can take a look at Beer & Johnston: Mechanics of Materials... it was the standard text that my classes used in school.  I'm not sure how well it stacks up to others but I refer to it off and on when my brain needs a kick in the right direction on something.  I also find websites like efunda a good place for refreshers on topics that I'm not always 100% on.

RE: Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

I don't have any of the books you have listed however I suspect they are covering different topics at different levels of complexity.  I think Timoshenkos Engineering Mechanics will be more of a statics and Dynamics book.  I think the Fung book will be at fairly high mathematical level with tensor equations.  As a result I am not quite sure what material/level of complexity you are looking for.

I have one called "Advanced Strength of Materials" by J.P. Den Hartog that is pretty good (and a cheap Dover paperback).

I also recently came across this http://caltechbook.library.caltech.edu/54/ which looks pretty good.

RE: Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

The name of the book in my second link is "The Analysis of Stress and Deformation" by George Housner.

RE: Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

Ditto on Beer and Johnston..I still have mine and occasionally refer to it after 34 years.

RE: Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

Beer and Johnston here too.

In addition:

(1) Mechanics Of Materials - E.P. Popov
(2) Advanced Mechanics Of Materials - Boresi/Sidebottom/Seely/Smith (might be the same...)
(3) Mechanics Of Solids And Structures - PP Benham & FV Warnock
(4) Mechanical Analysis And Design - AH Burr
(5) Mechanisms And Dynamics Of Machinery - Mabie & Ocvirk
(6) Engineering Mechanics - Schaum's (McLean & Nelson)

I find the "Benham & Warnock" to be clear, concise and to the point.  It's the one I pick up most.  I find the "Burr" to be very nicely done.

Regards,

SNORGY.

Thanks, fellas.  Looks like I need to do some poking around the library.

RE: Statics / Mechanics of Materials Reference

I have a copy of Popov at home.  My university flatmate gave it to me after he got his degree and went off to study law.  "I won't be needing this any more!"
