Lighting of Standpipes

Lighting of Standpipes

Lighting of Standpipes

(OP)
Are there any light detection required codes for standpipes other than in New Jersey which requires a four inch blue light to mark the placement of a standpipe.  If not should there be for ease of finding the standpipe in an emergency situation

RE: Lighting of Standpipes

I can't speak the the NJ uniform fire code, but I can tell you no such requirement exists in the 2009 IFC, and no such requirement should be prescribed. The standpipes are always in vertical stair enclosures that require at least one- or two-hour fire resistance based on the building height.

Would that also apply to hose systems meaning are they located in stair enclosures?

Thanks for your response

RE: Lighting of Standpipes

FYI such light is required to identify the FDC not the standpipe. Standpipe to me is the entire piping network employing hose valves.

Thanks for the correction.  Is the light a national requirement?

RE: Lighting of Standpipes

No, the illumination lamp is not a national requirement. It is not a specific requirement in the 2009 IFC. However, the fire code text is written so broadly that a fire code official could require a uniquely colored lamp to identify the location of the Fire Department Connection. Or it may be a state or local amendment in NJ.

RE: Lighting of Standpipes

In NJ is not really a State requirement. Some jurisdictions just want to see that to easy responders to locate the FDC. It will get that answer for you in the NJ Uniform Fire Code.

RE: Lighting of Standpipes

I just confirmed that the International Fire Code 2006 NJ Edition does not require any lighting for FDC's however any Fire Official may require such device.
Hope this helps
