Shear deflection calculation for wood beams

Shear deflection calculation for wood beams

(OP)
Could someone point me in the direction of a good resource to calculate shear deflection for wood beams? I am looking for an exact method that I could use to analyze beams with concentrated loads, partial loads or end moments.

Thank you in advance.

RE: Shear deflection calculation for wood beams

I want to say that NDS gives some guidance on accounting for shear deflection, but don't have it in front of me.

I'm not too sure that you will find an exact method for wood beams.  If you know the Modulus of Rigidity of a material, the theory is available in standard texts on Elasticity or Strength of Materials.

Wood is not an isotropic material, having different properties parallel versus perpendicular to the grain.

If you can express the curvature for a portion of the beam with constant shear, you can integrate the shear force diagram across the beam and find the deflection due to shear.  Or you could use an approach similar to the conjugate beam method.

I found the following link, but have not had a chance to study it.  You may find it useful.

The timber designers manual by Ozelton and Baird also goes in-depth with shear deflections
