When new drums of 11kV Cables arrived at site, what test should be done?

PD

RE: What Test should be done for New Cables ?

It depends on your testing plans in the future. If you want to do it right do a Tan Delta test to establish baseline data and do TD testing at regular intervals.

2nd option, VLF test, energize, then do on line PD testing to establish baselibe data for future on line PD testing. If getting a shutdown is near impossible at your facility this may be your best option.

3rd option, VLF test. If you do not plan on doing any regular testing in the future a VLF test will suffice. Not the best option but the cheapest.

Thanks all....

I didn't know that the VLF test and PD(what's that?) is for establishing the baseline data......

What is the data for? What's the theory behind?

RE: What Test should be done for New Cables ?

VLF: Very Low Frequency AC
PD:  Partial Discharge

My advice for new cable is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for field testing.

Cable testing is a controversial subject and to some extent the answer will vary depending on the type of cable insulation.

you should perform hi pot test ac/dc, insulation resistance test and conductor resistance test...

RE: What Test should be done for New Cables ?

quality-DC hipot not an effective test fir acceptance testing, and bnit allowed by any standard after 5 years. Power frequency AC hipot requires a huge power supply for MV cables and is unrealistic.

The baseline data is for condition assesment. There have been some excellent threads here in the past.

Were the reels shipped to you with knowledge they would be tested (in some fashion) on the reel?  Check to see if the inside cable end is accessible.  If so, is it undamaged and long enough to be prepped for testing?  If not, your options may be limited for testing on the reel. Regarding type of test I would consult the manufacturer.  You don't want to jeopardize any warranties.
