Ring Circuit (UK)

Ring Circuit (UK)

In UK, for a ring circuit, 32A SP MCB, 4sqmm Cu wire, How many general power sockets can be connected?

Help needed.

RE: Ring Circuit (UK)

Typically a ring circuit would be wired using 2.5mm^2 cable, unless the larger cable size was required to reduce the loop impedance in order to meet the 0.4s disconnect time on a ring which had a long circuit length, or perhaps if you had used a type D breaker; it's unusual to see a type D breaker on a ring main in my opinion.

As for the number of outlets, in principle there isn't any limit but you should look at the type of load and likely diversity of loads which would be connected and take that in to account. For example it's common to have a ring dedicated to a kitchen circuit where there's a high concentration of moderate to large loads, and a separate ring serving the remainder of the ground floor.

Have a read of the IEE's On Site Guide, or if you want chapter & verse read the current (17th) edition of BS 7671.
