minimum motor sealing requirement for coal fired power plants
minimum motor sealing requirement for coal fired power plants
(OP)
The folks on the power plant engineering forum suggested I repost here.
We provide some motorized equipment for use in coal fired power plants. Even on indoor installations Pulverized coal dust is everywhere, even in the real clean ones. The question comes up as to whether WP2 with filters or even TEFC sealing is required to protect the windings, etc. Quite a price difference on a 1000 HP motor.
I'm interested in real life experiences.
thanks

the area is classified as Class II division 1. Coal dust is Group F. See NEC Art.502
Motors in Class II-Division 1 locations must be explicitly rated (dust-ignitionproof) for those areas
or be totally enclosed pipe ventilated (TEPV) with approved maximum surface temperatures.
The autoignition temperature of the coal depends on volatile contents of the coal. At high volatile contents, the ignition temperature of a coal dust layer approaches a limiting temperature as low as 160oC (320oF).
The wiring has to be as per art.502 and sealing shall be done where required.
