ASME B31.3 - "Category K"

ASME B31.3 - "Category K"

(OP)
Hi all,

I am writing an introduction to ASME B31.3 - Process Piping.

In it, there is a fluid service category called "High Pressure Fluid Service" and it is detailed in Chapter IX "High Pressure Piping" All the chapter headings have the prefix of "K"

Here in the office we have taken to calling these fluids "Category K" fluids, even though thy're not called that in B31.3, this is because B31.3 does call out Category M and D fluids.

My question is, is "Category K" a commonly used way to describe High Pressure Fluid in the process piping industry?

RE: ASME B31.3 - "Category K"

Never heard that reference before. I always just refer to it as High Pressure Piping.

Same here. I deal with a variety of Codes and standards as an Inspection Engineer and "High Pressure Piping" is nice and descriptive whereas for instance Category D has dual meanings - also an ASME VIII branch connection.

But its your introduction so you are at liberty to re-name it as you will, just need to make it clear to your intended audience.
