Hi

I'm currently designing a barrel for a lab sized ball mill to incorporate into a processing system. I've struggled to find any resources with specific design information so have cobbled together a calc sheet in excel to start the process off. I'd be really keen to hear feedback from anyone who may have experience in this area or who could recommend a good design resource. I've attached my spreadsheet, feel free to have a look and or use it for your own work.

So far I have been using Crushing and Grinding by G.C. Lowrison and Ball and Tube and rod mills by H.E. Rose.

Specs:
The mill is to be used to mush a 3 Liter 50/50 mixture of soil and water. Basically I'm aiming to homogenize the solution and reduce average particle size to around 1 micron. I want to run it as a batch process and am currently trying to optimize drum size, ball size and rpm.

Any assistance or nudges in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Google the words " Riley Ball Mill " and there you will find some reading that I think will interest you.

You're not going to get to 1 micron with a rotating ball mill. Try googling sand mills, tower mills, ISA mills, attritioners and they "might" get you there.

The energy requiremetns to grind that fine are going to be very high- 1 micron is clay sized.

As a chem eng/metallurgist the first part of any answer I give starts with "It Depends"
