NFPA 58 Valve Material Specifications

NFPA 58 Valve Material Specifications

(OP)
Hello all,

I received a question today regarding the material specifications outlined in NFPA 58 2008 Ed. Section 5.12.1 and 5.17.  Section 5.12.1 states that the material for pressure containing valves for LP gas systems needs to be ductile iron per ASTM A 395, malleable iron, steel, or brass.

However, in section 5.17 specifically table 5.17.1.3 gray iron per ASTM A48 is an accpetable material for any pressure containing component within the LP gas system.

Therefore, why does section 5.12.1 not mention gray iron per ASTM A48 as an acceptable material or defer the material specifications to section 5.17?

The customer is worried that the current LP gas bypass valves they have do not meet NFPA 58 requirements.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Steve
