FLITCH BEAMS - STEEL ON OUTSIDE OF LUMBER

FLITCH BEAMS - STEEL ON OUTSIDE OF LUMBER

FLITCH BEAMS - STEEL ON OUTSIDE OF LUMBER

(OP)
I am reviewing a situation where flitch beams are needed, but there are already (2) 2 x 12's in place.
Can steel plates be added to lumber forming a flitch plate with the lumber in the middle?

RE: FLITCH BEAMS - STEEL ON OUTSIDE OF LUMBER

Buckling of the plate between the bolts will be more critical as it is not sandwiched between the timber beams, as is usually the case.

RE: FLITCH BEAMS - STEEL ON OUTSIDE OF LUMBER

Can you add additional timber outside the steel plates?  That would control buckling.
