Soil Nailing and Groundwater
Soil Nailing and Groundwater
(OP)
I'm doing a presentation on soil nailing at a local Geotechnical seminar soon (March 2) - wondering if anyone has any experience with using soil nailing in an area where there is groundwater seepage, and if so, what measures were taken to control groundwater?

RE: Soil Nailing and Groundwater
I have designed permanent and temporary soil nail shoring systems in areas with groundwater seepage and a groundwater table above the bottom of excavation. The system must be designed for hydrostatic pressures. During construction, dewatering must be performed to drop the water level below the bottom of excavation or the temporary unsupported vertical face will probably be unstable (i.e. excessive sloughing and ravelling). For the permanent condition, you would have to put in some water proofing such as full face liquid boot or bentonite mats and maybe even a footing drain and sump system.
