Generator Exhaust Pipe
Generator Exhaust Pipe
(OP)
We have a Generator on the Basement and is exhausted by an 8-inch Black Steel Pipe with 8-inch insulation to the Roof via a Chase. The pipe run on the Basement to the Chase is approximately 80 feet. We have limited vertical space to locate the muffler or silencer like it is shown in the manuals. The manufacturer suggested to locate the silencer at the Chase which is 80 ft. away from the Generator. By locating the silencer that far away, would that make the exhaust system nosier? Is there a noise level from a local code to follow on the Basement? Thanks.

RE: Generator Exhaust Pipe
The manufacturer's recommendation may be fine. The muffler is designed to limit noise transmission at the point of discharge. It would be better closer to the generator, but with all the insulation that may not be a problem.
I'm not sure about noise codes. Does this generator run all the time?
RE: Generator Exhaust Pipe
The exhaust pipe will radiate noise acoustically where it's not insulated, and will conduct noise into the structure where it's supported by rigid connections.
