What are the most common/efficient ways of recovering
waste heat from a furnace to be used to heat a combustion gas?

I have read about recuperators and regenerators.  The application is for an iron ore processing plant.

RE: waste heat recovery system

I've used a heat transfer medium or even made stream. The new fad is ORC  organic rankine cycle or even ammonia absorption if you need refrigeration (cooling to -20F).  ORMAT.COM is a company doing large projects. Googl ORC for more.

Google the words " Air Preheater "
