Problem in 1500 KW DC Motor

Problem in 1500 KW DC Motor

(OP)
Hello All

The attached pictures shows a problem happening in a 1500 KW DC Motor.

Any idea about the problem source? What to test?

Thanks for the Inputs

Carlos

RE: Problem in 1500 KW DC Motor

Looks like something has accumulated between the risers. Possibly with a high carbon or metallic particle content. A slight insulation failure then starts creep which easily develops into more heat and a complete short.

Periodic cleaning - at least once a year - seems to be a good thing to do.

As Skoggs says;
We can see a layer of something on the risers that is starting to flake and curl near the burned area. Whether that is a layer of paint or a layer of dirt, that close to the brushes it will have a high carbon content. It looks as if several more risers may flash over soon unless they are cleaned.

I see paint peeling off (overheat or aging ?). Stress cracking in risers. Not much of carbon collection.

Thanks to all for the inputs.I have attached  two pictures more.In the early picture the two raiser was repaired by weldding due to failure by cracking. Now other raisers are cracking. I think the problem could come from the agging,  we can see in the photos the raisers are curved, maybe  the  time action make the raisers start to fail.Looks like wear due to the curve design.

What test  think can we do? maybe vibration? verify the cooling?

Thanks again

Carlos

Such curved risers are normal for long risers to take care of thermal expansion.

The second picture says more. The 'dust' wasn't. Agree with Mutuh.

So, the bare metal was due to welding? No arc there?

Repairing commutator risers is always a tricky business. How old is this machine ?
