Hello everybody,
I have calculated a spherically dished bolted cover Type D with alternative rule of paragraph 4.7.5.3. In Table 4.7.1 it compares the membrane+bending stress at head-to-flange junction with 1.5*S. Why does it consider the bending like a primary stress and not like a secondary stress? If it will be secondary, the acceptance criteria must be 3*S!!

Thank you very much.

Thank you esce, but some doubts remain because also this articole seems to explain that this type of bending is a secondary bending stress...in any case thank you.

'cause that's what the Code volunteers decided was best.

If you really think that there is an error in this particular rule, write an inquiry to the committee explaining your rationale.  Then, a volunteer on the committee will take a look at it (hopefully in conjunction with you) and the committee as a whole will issue their ruling.

Until the rules are changed, however, the rules are the rules...
